Young children enjoy interaction with other children and they look forward to it. Just as young plants are affected by the conditions present in their early stages of growth, it is well known and established that external influences can have lasting effects on children for better or worse throughout life. The Baha’i writings uphold this principle and in Wenatchee, as in so many Baha’i communities worldwide there are weekly Children’s classes.

“The education and training of children is among the most meritorious acts of humankind..”
–Baha’i Writings

Children from all backgrounds are welcome at these classes and they are designed to complement the education that they receive at school. The curriculum is based on recognition of the concept that every child has a higher nature that must be nurtured and developed from an early age. In addition to the important education in literacy, sciences and arts that they receive in school, something else is needed and these Baha’i children’s classes strive to fill in that gap.

So in these classes lessons developed by skilled educators create an environment where the attention of young children is focused on traits like truthfulness, generosity, kindness, fairness and equity. The classes focus on social skills and the characteristics associated with friendship. It is an atmosphere designed to introduce them at this young age to the value and beauty of diversity and freedom from prejudice. It awakens them to the all-loving Creator who created the higher nature within them and to the common foundation of all the Great Religions. Their creative gifts are nurtured and encouraged through the use of stories, games, music and the arts.

Regard man as a mine rich in gems of inestimable value. Education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom.
-Bahá’u’lláh
